Hieronymus Megiser, a German scholastic, linguist, historian, and polyhistor, is also known in Slovenian literary history. This is because of his collaboration with the Slovenian Protestant writers and his work in Fužine near Ljubljana and in Celovec (Klagenfurt), but above all, he is valued as a dictionary writer, who in two dictionaries was one of the first to treat Slovenian as the equal of German, Latin, Italian, etc.
H. Megiser was born at the end of 1554 or 1555 in Stuttgart. From 1571 until 1577 he studies in Tübingen, where he was a fellow-student and friend of Jurij Dalmatin and both of Trubar's sons. About 1581, after an unfruitful search for teaching positions in his homeland, he obtained work as a tutor (through the help of J. Dalmatin) with Sir Janez Khisel in Fužine near Ljubljana. Part of that year he spent with the Khisels in Rijeka. In 1582, Megiser went to Padua to study law. In 1584-1588, he was the teacher and guardian of Jakob and Karl Khisel and Jurij Hartmann von Statenberg. After many travels in 1588 and 1589, he settled in Graz, Styria, but he soon left (1591) to travel in northern Germany, Holland, and England. He then settled in Frankfurt on the Main.
His well-known Dictionarium quatuor linguarum was printed in Graz in 1592. He married the daughter of the printer Johann Spiess of Frankfurt in about 1593. He then spent the years 1593-1601 in Celovec as the director of the Estates' school. In 1603, his Thesaurus Polyglottus was printed in Frankfurt by his father-in-law. He was forced to leave Celovec because of the Counter-Reformation and returned to Frankfurt. In 1613, he moved to Linz, where he was a professional historian and head of the town library.
